What is the NSC Calculator?
The National Savings Certificate (NSC) is a government-backed, fixed-tenure savings instrument sold through post offices (and some banks), open to any resident individual, including on behalf of a minor. It has a fixed 5-year lock-in, an interest rate set and revised by the government every quarter, and the amount invested qualifies for a deduction under Section 80C.
How to Calculate
Enter the amount you plan to invest and the current NSC interest rate (check the latest government-notified rate, since it changes quarterly for new investments). Interest compounds annually but isn't paid out along the way — it's added back to the balance and the entire amount, principal plus all accumulated interest, is paid to you only when the certificate matures after 5 years.
Formula
Maturity Value = Principal × (1 + rate)5
Interest compounds annually but is not paid out — it is reinvested and paid in full only at maturity, along with the principal.
Worked Example
Investing ₹1,00,000 in NSC at 7.7% p.a. for 5 years:
Maturity = 100000 × (1.077)5 ≈ ₹1,44,900
How to Use
- Enter the amount you plan to invest.
- Confirm the current NSC interest rate.
- Read the maturity value and interest earned after the fixed 5-year term.
